Make Learning Sight Words Fun!
Do you have a child who is learning how to read? Or maybe researching ways to make learning how to read fun?
If you’re worried that learning sight words is going be a boring yawn fest of flashcards, then I’m so glad you’re here with this fun way to learn high-frequency words 🙂
After teaching my four older boys how to read, I discovered that teaching kids how to read doesn’t have to be blah. And it doesn’t have to look just one way.
Now that my youngest boy is becoming a reader, I’m applying some of the lessons that I learned from my experiences with his big brothers. I’m following his interest and making it fun. Those two things have had the best impact on keeping him engaged.
I created these free sight words memory games for fun ways to give Xman hands-on opportunities to learn and practice these challenging words. Now, we’ve added these coloring pages to our arsenal of sight words fun activities. Hope you enjoy this resource, too!
These sight word printables are fantastic for morning work, sight word identification, early finishers, and independent practice. You’ll find that this pack is a great way for young children to learn high frequency words.
Add a Creative Touch to Practicing Sight Words
There’s something special about adding coloring to learning activities. Crayons, markers, color pencils. The colors and textures help new concepts stick.
After using our Mandala Multiplication Coloring Pages with Smiley (10) and Bear (8), I knew that I needed to add a coloring component to help Xman (5) learn his sight words. These coloring activities have been extremely helpful in solidifying multiplication facts for big brothers. Sight Words Coloring Pages was a no brainer 😉
While Xman is working on these sight word coloring sheets, he repeats the word a few times as he colors. Sometimes, he turns it into a bit of a made-up song. Other times, Xman whispers the sight word to himself until he completes that section.
When he finishes one of his sight words coloring pages, he proudly displays it on our refrigerator for all to see.
Easy Ways to Make These Sight Words Coloring Pages Fun
Want to make sure your kids get the most out of these sight words worksheets and encourage learning fun? Here are a few ways that Xman and I are boosting the learning fun with these sight words color worksheets:
- Variety of fun coloring utensils: Let your child pick what kind of coloring utensil they’d like to use today with the color key. Some fun options include crayons, markers, color pencils, or Kwik Stix. Watercolor paints are another fantastic way to complete these pages.
- Music: We love to play different types of music in our homeschool. Depending on our mood or need, we will play relaxing or energizing music in the background. We’ve found that music makes coloring so much fun 🙂
- Activity breaks: Too much sitting at one time can be boring. Keep it fun with brain breaks that have your child get up and move. Activity cubes (check out our free Dr. Seuss and Winnie-the-Pooh ones) are fabulous ways to stretch and move.
- Hand warm-up and stretches (all that coloring can lead to tired hands!)
- Use the word bank at the bottom of each page to trace and practice.
