What's your approach to celebrating holidays with kids?

Do you have a tendency to go overboard with lots of stuff and complicated activities?

Or do you barely remember it's happening until it's almost too late, rushing to find something quick and simple to do so you don't feel so bad about forgetting another holiday?

I can totally relate to both approaches!

With my oldest, I overplanned any type of holiday fun. I'd cram crafts, games, books, and activities into our schedule. Overall, he and I would have fun but, at some point, there would be a meltdown (usually me!).

By the time our 5th boy was added, I almost did a 180. Who had time to plan and prep for holiday fun? (Or even notice it was coming up on the calendar?) Often, I'd be scrambling at the last minute to put something together that my boys could enjoy.

Fortunately, I've found a healthy balance to enjoying fun holiday activities with my boys 🙂 Now, I use our fun day calendar and keep it simple.

I've added this simple Halloween memory game to our collection of activities for a relaxed holiday celebration. This memory game with cute Halloween themes is a great way to enjoy holiday fun with young children and for:

  • Brain breaks for kids
  • Parties
  • Family fun
  • Community event (library, etc.)
  • Homeschool co-op
  • Special activity to send home with your class
  • Simple activity to send to your distance learning class

Tips for Using This Free Halloween Game

You're probably familiar with how to play a memory game. These classic games are so much fun! I'll share my ideas and tips here, in case you'd like a refresher (or you play a different way).

First, you'll need to get your free Halloween memory game (or Halloween matching game) by subscribing to Rock Your Homeschool. (Just scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out how.)

When you have your download, print out this game. I recommend using white cardstock for durability. If you use regular copy paper or thin cardstock, you'll want to glue the pages to something thicker to prevent transparency (like construction paper, scrapbook paper, or cardstock).

An optional next step is to laminate for extra durability.

Cut out the Halloween memory cards with themes of:

  • October 31 calendar page
  • Jack o' lantern bag
  • Vampire
  • Cauldron
  • Bat
  • Pumpkin candle
  • Poison
  • Witch
  • Girl trick-or-treater
  • Boy trick-or-treater
  • Haunted house
  • Candy corn
  • Black cat
  • Mummy
  • Spider
  • Poison bottle with skull
  • Ghost
  • Candy
  • Broomstick

Shuffle the cards and place them face down on a smooth surface.

Players take turns trying to make a match by flipping over two cards. (In our home, we allow the youngest to go first but maybe you want to try alphabetical order?).

If a match is made, the player collects those two cards and takes another turn, repeating until a match is not made.

The next player takes a turn by flipping over two cards.

Repeat these steps until all matches have been made.

The winner of this Halloween memory game is the player who has made the most matches.

Creative Ideas for Boosting the Fun with This Game

Want to extend the fun Halloween activities with this free printable game?

A few ways that my boys and I like to add a bit of excitement to our memory match game include:

  • Keeping track of matches with tally marks. Adds math fun and helps everyone pay attention.
  • Instead of tally marks, you could use Halloween-themed stickers to mark down a match in a type of pictograph.
  • Play age-appropriate Halloween music in the background as you play.
  • Challenge your players to spell the Halloween characters and themes.
  • Use the Halloween memory game cards as inspiration for doodling or drawing.
  • Think of other fun Halloween memory game themes, like a spider's web.

Consider using this fun Halloween game for building memory skills, rainy day fun, and other fun activities.
