Let’s bring a fable to life than with a simple, hands-on craft! This cupcake liner The Tortoise and The Hare craft is a fun way to explore these classic stories and get creative.
With cupcake liners, some construction paper, and a few markers, kids can make their own tortoise and hare scene. It’s a great companion activity for storytime, a fable unit study, or a fun afternoon craft with no fancy supplies required.

Why Fables Are Perfect for Young Learners
Fables have been around for thousands of years and there’s a good reason they’ve stuck around. These simple stories do something special by wrapping big life lessons in memorable packages that kids can understand and relate to.
The Tortoise and the Hare is a perfect example. The story is engaging with a race, a surprising twist, and a satisfying ending. Underneath all of that is a lesson about perseverance, humility, and not giving up even when things feel hard. Those are values worth talking about, and fables give you a natural way to do it.
Here are a few reasons fables are such a great learning tools:
- They’re short and satisfying. Fables are perfectly sized for little attention spans. Kids get a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. Great for early literacy skills!
- They spark great conversations. The moral of a fable is a natural conversation starter. “What do you think the tortoise was feeling when the hare ran ahead?”
- They introduce early character education. Concepts like kindness and resilience are woven into fable storytelling. These tales make it easy to introduce these ideas without a formal lesson.
- They pair well with hands-on activities. When kids make something connected to a story they’ve heard, it deepens their understanding and helps them remember it.
What You’ll Need to Enjoy This Fable Craft
This craft keeps the supply list nice and simple. In fact, you may already have most of these materials on hand!
- 1 green cupcake liner
- 1 white cupcake liner
- Blue construction paper (or other color if you prefer)
- Markers (white, green, pink, black – or customize)
- Scissors
- Glue

How to Make the Tortoise and the Hare Craft
Step 1: Make the tortoise shell and add details.
Flatten your green cupcake liner and glue it to the left side of your blue construction paper. The ridged texture of the liner makes a perfect tortoise shell – no extra decorating needed!
Use green marker to draw on head, arms, and legs. Use black marker to add eyes.

Step 2: Make the hare’s face and ears.
Flatten your white cupcake liner and glue it to the right side of the blue construction paper, next to the tortoise.
Using your white marker, draw two tall rabbit ears above the cupcake liner. Then, use your pink marker to add the inner ear details. If you’re working with younger kids, you can pre-draw the ears and let them color in the pink.
Use your black marker to draw two eyes and three whiskers on each side of the nose. Finish with a small pink nose in the center using your pink marker.

Ideas for Using This Craft with Kids
This activity is a frugal and low-prep project. If you have time, I encourage you to take it to the next level.
You can keep the craft as-is. OR you can cut the paper in half to make the fable characters separate. Another idea is to glue your cupcake liners to wood craft sticks (popsicle sticks) and decorate.
With your individual tortoise and hare, your kids can reenact the race. Stick to the classic story or tweak it with a creative twist. Add other animals, too!
This tortoise and hare craft pairs perfectly with:
- Reading The Tortoise and the Hare aloud before or after crafting
- A discussion about the story’s moral (“Slow and steady wins the race!”
- A writing or narration prompt for older kids: “What would YOU do if you were the hare?”
It’s also a natural fit for a fairy tale and fable unit, a preschool literacy activity, or even a fun summer craft when you want something low-prep and high on charm.
