Plan & Prepare a Special Mother's Day Poetry Teatime with Your Kids

I don't know about you but, as a homeschool mom, I find it awkward helping my kids prepare for and celebrate Mother's Day. Am I supposed to direct them in making crafts and special treats for me?

I have no problem helping them create cards and tokens for their grandmothers, great-grandmother, and aunts. But, it just feels odd to sit them down and guide them in making stuff to give to me.

Ordinarily, my boys have no problem spending time with me, chatting up a storm, and having fun. But, Mother's Day is not a holiday that naturally floats on their radar.

This year, however, I had a realization. Why can't I help them plan and prepare a special celebration for Mother's Day? Make it not just about me but about ALL mothers!

And, we could do it with one of our favorite activities-Poetry Teatime!

To help us get our special Mother's Day Poetry Teatime planning started, we used this list of 10 ideas plus these 2 resources:

You can use the Teatime Planner to plan your special celebration. The checklists are extremely helpful in getting your kids involved in preparing and cleaning up the festivities.

10 Ways to Have a Lovely Mother's Day Poetry Teatime

1. Flowers

These natural beauties add a special touch to your Mother's Day Poetry Teatime. Your kids can pick some fresh flowers in your yard or purchase them in a store. If your kids enjoy craft time, they could make one of these 20 Gorgeous Flower Crafts (Buggy and Buddy).

2. Special Treat

Include a delicious sweet or savory treat in your celebration. You can indulge a bit in your favorite yummy dish or be healthy with a fruit or veggie platter. Here are some wonderful Poetry Teatime Pinterest boards to follow for inspiration.

3. Music

Select a few relaxing songs for easy background music. Pick some music that mom loves-maybe Classical music or even soft rock 😉

4. List of Poems about Moms

Let's really make this special day about mom! Read and discuss poems dedicated to mothers. Here's a list of 100 of the best poems about moms.

5. Arts & Crafts

Your kids can create some beautiful art for you to enjoy!

Chalk Pastels (You ARE An Artist) has some amazing lessons and tutorials that can guide your kids in making fields of flowers and lovely landscapes. We love chalk pastels for our art because they are so stress-free, easy, and fun to use! Plus, you really do feel like an artist!

6. Decor

Your kids can create special place cards with each person's name and creative design for embellishment.

Also, simple coloring pages can be made extra special for your celebration. Posterboard and Kwik Stix (solid tempera paint sticks) are wonderful for making large messages and banners!

7. Candles

Light up your Mother's Day Poetry Teatime celebration with candles. You can use store-bought candles or make your own. My boys LOVE making hand-rolled beeswax candles 🙂

8. Kids Do the Prep

Here's where those Poetry Teatime Checklists come in! Keep it simple and let your kids do the work. Really! Even if you have store-bought vanilla wafer cookies and milk, your Mother's Day Poetry Teatime can be special 🙂

9. Kids Do the Clean-Up (sorta)

Let your kids do a majority of the clean-up. Well, as much as they can do according to age and ability. I wouldn't let my lil' man handle our fine China but he can certainly put away our poetry books and wipe off the table.

10. Special Tea & Drinks

It's not every day that you get to celebrate Mother's Day Poetry Teatime! Get some special tea or other fancy drink (my boys like sparkling lemonade) to mark the special occasion.
