Delight in Holiday Learning Fun with Christmas in Italy

I wasn't surprised when my boys requested that we include Italy in our Christmas Fun Around the World studies.

Although we don't have Italian ancestry, my boys have always been fascinated with this country. One of their favorite soccer teams (Juventus) calls Italy home. Plus, the food!

I was surprised, however, when the boys shared their reason for learning about Christmas in Italy. Our nativity set is Fontanini. We've loved to learn about the history of these nativity sets and the individual pieces.

As we learned about Italian Christmas fun facts, music, and more, the boys and I had to try a traditional holiday food. We found panettone at a local store and it was a big hit.

Some of the many ways to enjoy popular Italian Christmas traditions with your kids are:

  • Nativity scenes
  • Learning about La Befana
  • Babbo Natale (Santa Claus)
  • Different days celebrated in the month of December, like:
    • St. Nicholas Day (December 6th)
    • Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th)
    • La Vigilia di Natale (the day before Christmas, also known as the feast of the seven fishes on Christmas Eve)
    • La Festa di Santo Stefano (the day after Christmas, St. Stephen's Day on December 26th)
    • Epiphany (Three Kings Day on January 6th)
  • Practice saying Buon Natale (Merry Christmas)

Recommended Resources to Learn About an Italian Christmas

Christmas in Italy was one of our favorite studies last year. In fact, the boys loved it so much that they want to include it in our Christmas Fun Around the World again this holiday season.

We found a few books at our local library to use, as well as used the Italy page from Why Christmas. Oh, and we adore The Legend of Old Befana by Tomie DePaola!
