Frequently Asked Questions About This St. Patrick's Day Project

What type of coffee filter should I use for this project?

You can use standard white coffee filters. But, you can also experiment with natural or brown filters for a different look. Also, my boys and I have used layers of tissue paper with success.

Can I use other materials besides markers?

Absolutely! You can try watercolor paints, crayons, or even food coloring to dye the coffee filter for a different effect. We've used Kwik Stix (tempera paint sticks) and that went well.

What’s the best way to dry the shamrocks after coloring them?

Lay them flat on a clean surface and allow them to air dry. I like to place a few layers of paper towels underneath the damp coffee filters to speed up the process. Also, a fan set on a gentle breeze can make it faster. Don't place the wet coffee filter on anything with color or print (like newspaper) because those colors can interfere with your final shamrock!
