Let’s Make February Fun in Your Homeschool!
Hello and welcome to this episode of the Positively Homeschool Podcast! Want to easily make February fun in your homeschool? Well, Iโm glad youโre here! Iโve got some fun February homeschool ideas and activities that your kids and you will love.
Homeschool fun is where itโs at – especially for February! I donโt know about you, but Iโve found February to be a struggle with homeschooling. Itโs usually still cold and icy here. And although weโve got a good chunk of our homeschool year done, we still have a while to go!
Letโs look at all the different ways that you can have a blast in February – without breaking the bank.
In case you missed it, I shared my thoughts on homeschool fun in episode 7. And I shared some super cool January homeschool fun ideas in episode 8. Iโll leave links in the show notes for both of those episodes.
Iโve found the most successful way to enjoy fun homeschool activities with your kids is to:
- Keep it simple
- Be flexible – be willing to pivot and be open to discussion
- Weave fun activities throughout our homeschool day and weekย
When Iโm on my homeschool fun game and doing those 3 things, my boys and I are able to relax and enjoy ourselves so much better. It takes practice but itโs so worth it! If you struggle with any of those things, let me know! Email me at rockyourhomeschool@gmail.com and Iโll be happy to chat about things to try.
4 Ways to Make February Fun
As with all of our monthly homeschool fun activities, I stick with the basics. No need to overcomplicate! When Iโm planning and preparing, I look for:
- Themes
- Fun days
- Holidays
- Just because
- Themes:
February has a bunch of awesome monthly themes to celebrate. Weโre still in winter (at least in the northern hemisphere!) so winter seasonal themes work. I shared these ideas for January but you can still totally continue to have fun with:
- Snow
- Snowflakes
- Snowmen
- Arctic
- Penguins
I often include themes with ice in February, too. Where we live, we usually have a lot of it (and slush) so the boys like to talk and learn about it.
Also, you can choose themes based on February Monthly Observations, like:
- Black History Month
- Embroidery Month
- Heart Month
- Hot Breakfast Month
- Childrenโs Dental Health Month
- Cherry Month
- Bird Feeding Month
- Bake for Family Fun Month
- Grapefruit Month
- Library Loverโs Month
- Snack Food Month
- Fun Days:ย February has some fantastic fun days! These nationally-recognized days can be silly or serious. Make sure to get my free printable Fun Day Calendar for Kids that you can use.ย
Iโve got links in the show notes to blog posts with ideas and resources for many of these fun days. And Iโll brainstorm ideas for some of them now:
- Feed the Birds Day – make a bird feeder with your kids, read about birds local to your area, set a timer and watch birds from your window – record the types you see and make a chart
- World Read Aloud Day – pick a family favorite book and read it aloud
- Periodic Table Day – talk about the periodic table and why we use it, randomly pick an element and learn about it
- Kite Flying Day – make a kite craft
- pizza Day – make pizza for lunch or dinner, turn a paper plate into a pizza craft
- Inventorโs Day – make your own Inventorโs Box, pick a famous inventor to learn about
- Abraham Lincolnโs Day – learn about the 16th U.S. president, make a log cabin craft or paper plate mask
- Gum Drop Day – use gumdrops and toothpicks to build fun structures
- Tell a Fairy Tale Day – share your favorite fairy tale and talk about the characters
- Pokemon Day – use our free printable Pokemon activities (like crafts, perler bead templates, color by number pages, coloring bookmarks)
- Tooth Fairy Day – enjoy some tooth fairy coloring pages
- Holidays:ย Celebrate February holidays in your homeschool!ย
- Groundhog Day – try our free printable color by number pages, word search, and I have 2 super cute crafts youโll love. We actually arenโt too far from Punxsutawney, PA (well, itโs a few hours) so get a kick out of Punxsutawney Phil!
- Valentineโs Day – such a great day to celebrate love and kindness. Iโve got a bunch of crafts (like heart-shaped toilet paper roll binoculars – so fun!) freebies over on the blog – activity sheets, color by number pages, cards, and more). Oh, and try our Valentineโs Day Unit Study! Iโve got a brand NEW Create & Celebrate Valentineโs Day Activity Kit, too. Iโm SO excited about this resource. It has project cards (and resources) for crafts, STEM, challenges, and games to make it easy to celebrate the holiday, even if youโre busy.
- Presidentโs Day – perfect time to learn and talk about U.S. presidents – get my free Presidentโs Day coloring pages and mega-pack of coloring fun for all the presidents.
- Just Because
Customize your February homeschool fun! Talk with your kids about their current interests. Brainstorm how you can weave those interests into homeschool fun.
For example, my youngest has gotten into perler bead crafts again. Do your kids do that? My boys get super into an activity or hobby and then go cold for a bit. And then Boom! Itโs back! So, heโs working through our perler bead templates and making his own. Itโs a wonderful activity for him to keep his hands busy during our homeschool morning time.
I like to jump in there with him and make perler bead crafts with him. So simple and so fun!
