Now that the new A Minecraft Movie has been released, my boys have expressed renewed interest in this popular game. And it's brought back so many memories!
I remember making these toilet paper roll Minecraft torches with my boys when they were younger and absolutely obsessed with the game. It was such a blast watching their faces light up as they transformed plain old toilet paper rolls into these Minecraft-inspired decorations.
We even used some of their finished projects as part of the decorations at my middle son’s Minecraft birthday party. They also loved using their DIY torches for creative play. I think it's awesome when your children can use their projects in so many ways!
What You'll Need to Make This DIY Minecraft Torch
Before you get started with this project, I encourage you to go through your craft supplies and find these materials. It will make is so much easier to get started!
- Empty toilet paper roll
- Yellow, orange, and brown markers or paint
- Red, yellow, and orange tissue paper
- Scissors
- Glue
A few of my boys used their believe Kwik Stix (tempera paint sticks) to make their torches have bolder colors. I wanted to share that idea in case you'd like the look of paint without all the mess.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Your Minecraft Craft
Shape the torch base.
Gently press the toilet paper roll to flatten it. Fold the edges a second time to create a square shape.
Color the torch flame area.
On the top ¼ of the toilet paper roll, use yellow and orange to color square shapes, creating a glowing effect.
Color the torch handle.
Use different shades of brown to color square shapes on the lower ¾ of the toilet paper roll. Leave some squares uncolored to mimic the pixelated Minecraft look.
Make the tissue paper flames.
Cut red, yellow, and orange tissue paper into squares. Stack the squares on top of each other. Pinch the center and bunch up the paper to form a flame shape.
Attach the flames and let dry.
Apply glue to the inside top of the toilet paper roll. Insert the tissue paper flames and press gently to secure them. Allow the glue to dry completely before using your Minecraft torch for play or decoration! Optional: Add a flameless tea light inside the tube so it glows like a real torch. Use tape, painter's tape, or washi tape to hold the tea light in place.
