Help Your Kids Track Reading Progress & Have Fun!

Do your kids like to read or do they put up a stink when it comes to independent reading time?

Overall, my boys enjoy reading, especially when they get to pick their favorites.

When life gets busy or a distraction pops up, my boys will put up a bit of a fight. Although I'm a voracious reader, I understand that my boys might not be the same way. I do want my boys to develop positive reading habits.

Instead of making reading time a struggle, I strive to make it enjoyable. And I've found that my boys love to turn learning into fun challenges and adventures!

In our homeschool, we use a variety of tracking charts and other motivational tools. These visual reminders keep my boys on track and help my focus on their goals. (I have a tendency to squirrel and jump down rabbit holes 😉 )

Reasons for Using These Punchcards for Reading Tracker Fun for Kids

Recently, Xman (my youngest) started to learn how to read. He's been so excited to join his older brother in their reading adventures!

To help him keep track of his reading practice and progress, I created these Punchcards for Reading Tracker Fun. These punchcards are also great for:

  • Good habit building:  Help your kids develop positive reading habits by using motivational tools like these cards.
  • Reluctant readers:  If you have kids who'd rather not spend time reading, they might enjoy it more when it's made a challenge or game.
  • Motivate and reward:  You may choose to give your kids a reward when they've completed their reading goals for their punchcard. These rewards don't have to be material! Get creative and agree upon fun activities like movie night, picnic, or baking a yummy treat.
  • Homeschool portfolio documentation:  If you're need or want to make a homeschool portfolio, you can use these punchcard trackers to show your students' reading progress.
  • Make reading fun!:  Take the stress and struggle out of independent reading time. Add a touch of fun and make the experience enjoyable for all 🙂

Tips & Great Ideas for Getting the Most Out of Your Reading Trackers

Before you begin using these reading tracker cards with your kids, set realistic expectations. Clearly state how long you expect your child to read in order to earn their sticker/stamp/hole punch.

Have your child write their name (or you can jot it down for them!) on their punchcard for reading tracker fun. Record the book(s) read on the back of the card. You can also add number of minutes read, too.

Keep these punchcards in the same place all the time to avoid losing them. Your kids can use these punchcards as bookmarks. Or put the cards in your reading basket or bookshelves.

Select a special way to mark a completed reading time. Use a regular hole punch, stylized hole punch, stickers, stamps, or markers. Here are a few of our favorites:
