Supercharge Your Summer Reading with Fun Challenges
Reading challenges are remarkable ways to take your summer learning fun to the next level. And kids of all ages can benefit from the these types of activities!
If you haven't tried a summer reading challenge with your kids, you're in for a real treat. A summer reading challenge is basically a program that encourages students to read (or listen to) a variety of books during a certain period of time. There are all sorts of reading challenges with summer themes available. You can choose to do one through your local library, stores (like Barnes & Noble), or school.
OR you can decide to customize your summer reading challenge by hosting it yourself!
As a homeschool mom of 5 boys (with a twelve year gap between oldest and youngest), I could never quite find summer reading challenges that all of my boys could participate together in some way. The challenges would either be too young and babyish or too old and inappopriate.
So, I decided that summer reading challenges for all ages was needed!
Why Summer Reading Challenges Are Powerful for Kids of All Ages
Before I get into our summer reading challenges, let's look at why these sort of activities are so beneficial.
The American Library Association shares some amazing benefits of summer reading programs. I've added some of our experiences and ideas to this list:
- Motivate with fun incentives and rewards
- Develop life-long positive habits of reading
- Explore a variety of genres and topics
- Spark curiosity (and go down all kinds of educational rabbit trails)
- Prevent summer slide (if you take off from school work during the summer)
- Screen-free activities
- Boredom busters
