Enjoy A Mess-Free Science Project for Kids

Learning about volcanoes with your students and need a simple project? This printable pack will help you do that!

A volcano science project is a classic activity to enjoy with kids. There are so many fantastic ways to create a DIY volcano that explodes - and gets messy.

But, when life gets busy and you don't have time for all that mess and stress, a simple project is necessary. Plus, it's helpful to have a type of visual learning tool that you can continue to use as reminders of what you've learned.

When I looked ahead at one of my younger boy's science themes, I saw volcano. So, I knew we'd be doing some type of papier mache volcano project. I don't often stress about the mess in our homeschool but knew we'd also benefit from having a mess-free experience.

This printable volcano diorama kit is the perfect solution for enjoying a hands-on science activity without all the mess!

How to Make This Paper Volcano Diorama Project

Good news! You only need a few supplies to create this paper volcano diorama.

Recommended Supplies for this Printable Volcano Diorama Project

  • white cardstock (makes the project much more durable & easy to work with)
  • scissors
  • glue stick or glue
  • clear tape (reinforces the seams)
  • coloring tools (if using the black-and-white version) - crayons, color pencils, fine-tip markers

When you have your materials ready, it's time to turn your printable volcano diorama project into 3D science fun.

Steps for Making This Volcano Diorama Project

  1. Print out the volcano diorama pages on white cardstock.
  2. Pick which style (color or black-and-white) you'd like to use for your project.
  3. If you chose the black-and-white version, color the pieces.
  4. Cut out the pieces.
  5. Prepare to assemble the bases of your diorama by folding along the dotted lines and tabs. This step makes it easier to adhere the pieces!
  6. Use a glue stick or glue on the tabs.
  7. Fold the base into a rectangular shape.
  8. Adhere the tabs by pressing onto the rectangular base.
  9. Reinforce seams (if necessary) with clear tape.
  10. Fold the volcano pieces along the dotted lines and tabs.
  11. I suggest gently forming the volcano pieces to get an idea of how they go together. This step took my boys and myself a few minutes so don't worry if the same happens for you!
  12. Put glue on the tabs of the volcano pieces.
  13. Press the tabs onto their corresponding pieces on the volcano.
  14. Use tape to reinforce seams (if necessary).

Creative Ideas for Using This Volcano Project with Kids

Wondering how you can enjoy this volcano diorama project with your kids? Here are some of my ideas. I also recommend that you to chat with your kids and explore their ideas, too.

You can totally use this project as it is. OR adhere the bases to a piece of cardboard, cardstock, or other sturdy material to display.

Another idea is to attach the two bases together with glue, glue gun, or tape.

Consider displaying your paper volcano project in homeschool space or classroom. My boys have their volcanoes on our bookshelves. You could also put them on a windowsill, desk, table, or homeschool cart.
