Free Halloween Game with Spiders and Ladders for Fantastic Math Fun

Halloween Math Fun for Kids

Holidays are a great time of year to boost learning fun. Kids are already excited about the holiday. Using lessons, activities, and games with holiday themes gets them engaged and ready to learn.

Over the years, some of the best memories from our homeschool have come from holiday learning fun activities. And Halloween is definitely no exception!

Carving pumpkins is a fantastic time to learn about the pumpkin life cycle, pumpkin anatomy, and doing all sorts of fun activities with pumpkin seeds.

After trick-or-treating, making candy patterns (and then enjoying the goodies) is a blast.

To add to our Halloween activities for kids, I'm sharing this simple Spiders & Ladders game. It's an amazingly easy and free way to practice basic math skills and enjoy interactive fun.

How to Play This Simple Halloween Game

In this free printable set (to get your pack, scroll down to end of this post and subscribe to Rock Your Homeschool), you'll find a page of instructions. I'll give you a quick overview here, in case you'd like to see if this game is something you and your kids will like 😉

First, print the game board on a sheet of white paper. (I recommend using cardstock for durability).

An extra step (but definitely worth it!) is to laminate the game board. I laminate our game boards to keep them looking nice and for when we want to use playdough balls (or figures) as game pieces.

Each player needs to select a game piece. I encourage you to get creative with this step. Here are a few ideas:

mini-erasers
plastic spiders (perfect for Halloween)
coins
playdough balls (or pumpkins, bats, cauldrons)
small toys

Oh, you'll also need a six-sided die. The first player (we usually have the youngest go first) rolls the die and moves their game piece.

If a player lands at the bottom of a ladder, they get to move up it. If a player lands on a spider web, the player slides down to where the spider is.

The winner is the first player to land on the last square!

Excellent Ways to Boost the Learning Fun with This Spiders & Ladders Game

If you'd like to supercharge this Halloween game, here are a few ideas:

Practice number recognition by calling out the number rolled and the number of the square landed on.
Have players add or subtract as they move.
Challenge players to spell the number word (rolled and/or landed on).
Give players silly Halloween challenges to get them up and moving before or after each roll. For example, a player could "fly like a bat" or "ride on a broom like a witch".
Play age-appropriate Halloween music in the background.
Keep track of wins using tally marks and make a chart of the results.
