My boys and I have celebrated Earth Day in so many ways over the years. We've read books, enjoyed hands-on activities (like our free cootie catchers), played games, and more.

Recently, my boys have also really had a blast with perler bead activites. They love using these small plastic beads (also called Hama beads) to make all sorts of cute creatures, critters, and characters. The boys turn these DIY crafts into little toys, keychains, and decor.

Of course, I looked for ways to combine their interests with our upcoming Earth Day celebration!

How to Make These Perler Bead Crafts

Enjoy your perler bead art time with kids using these tips and tricks. You'll discover that it makes it much easier to create these crafts.

I recommend that you have ALL of your supplies ready and organized.

I purchased a big canister of perler beads and perler bead pegboards that attach (in case the boys want to create large symbols). And I got a plastic craft organizer so the boys would be able sort the perler beads by colors.

Some kids enjoy using perler beads tweezer tools. These types of tools are totally optional - my boys prefer to use their fingers.

Put your perler bead creation (on the pegboard) on a flat surface.

The set of perler bead pegboards that I bought includes reusable ironing paper. I've found that you can also use parchment paper or waxed paper. This paper is placed upon your completed creation.

You'll need an iron to fuse your perler beads. Typically, I set the temperature of my iron to a medium heat. When your iron is warm, press firmly on the ironing paper and slowly move around. I check the perler bead creation about every 30 seconds to see how well the beads are melting together.

When using these Earth Day perler bead patterns, I suggest going through each template and having your child select a favorite one for their first project. My boys cut out the perler bead pattern cards and placed next to their pegboards. They found it easier to make their Earth Day crafts this way.

If you don't have the exact colors, please don't worry. Use what colors you have and enjoy your special designs 😀

Creative Ideas for Enjoying Earth Day Perler Beads

Chat with your kids about their ideas for these perler bead art activities. Brainstorm ways to enjoy and share your Earth Day perler bead crafts, too.

One idea is to start a collection of perler bead crafts. My boys like to put their crafts in their bedrooms, as well as decorate our shelves and bookcases with them.

Also, you can also leave a space or hole near the top of your perler bead craft. You can add a key chain ring or loose binder ring. Your kids can use this type of craft for keys, decorate party gift bags (super cute gift tags!), and party favors. Oh, and I love the idea of adding these perler bead crafts to these cute Earth Day coloring bookmarks!
