Enjoy a Frugal Craft for Harry Potter Fun
Are you searching for a creative activity for kids to enjoy while reading or listening to Harry Potter books? Maybe you'd like a craft that actually looks cool and you can use for a Harry Potter movie night or party? Perhaps you need a frugal way to make a Harry Potter craft?
Well, this paper plate Golden Snitch craft is great for all of those things and more!
My boys and I are total Potterheads. We've read and listened to all of the Harry Potter books (and other resources related to the series, like The Tales of Beedle the Bard) over and over again. And we look for ways to celebrate our favorite characters whenever we can!
Harry Potter has been a delightful part of our homeschool fun over the years. We've had poetry teatimes and parties dedicated to these stories. Basically, if it's Harry Potter-themed, we add it to our list!
Sweet treats (many of which we drooled over and then created from The Official Harry Potter Cookbook and The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook) are always part of our magical celebrations. Games, like our free printable Harry Potter alphabet game and Patronus Picker, are delights. Crafts, like this Golden Snitch paper plate craft, have also been big hits!

How to Make This Golden Snitch Paper Plate Craft
01
Cut out circle and paint
Cut the center circle out of the paper plate. Be sure to keep it intact.
Paint this circle yellow.
02
Cut wings
Cut segments from the outer ring for the wings. Each one should be about ¼ of the ring.
Cut each end of the wings diagonally so they taper to a point. The tapering cut should start on the inside of the arc and move toward the outside corner.
03
Add accent lines
Once the main circle has dried, paint the accent lines using brown paint.
The accent lines on the inside can be simple arcs or can be more complicated if you desire.
04
Glue on wings
Glue the wing tips to the back of the yellow circle.
Glue the wings so they arc upwards.
05
Let dry
Allow all pieces of your Golden Snitch craft to completely dry. Enjoy!
Creative Ideas for Making and Using This Harry Potter Craft
I think this paper plate craft for kids is fantastic for getting into the Harry Potter spirit. You can use it as a decoration or activity for:
- a Harry Potter party
- book club
- reading time
- story time craft
- Harry Potter brain breaks
- just because (like rainy day fun or boredom buster).
If you're working with several children, I recommend keeping the craft as simple as possible (unless you have extra time and supplies).
If you're using your Golden Snitch craft as part of a larger display (like a bulletin board or hallway decorations), it could be fun to use different size paper plates.
Another variation is to use a circular white coffee filter. This option gives you a different texture plus lighter completed project if you'd like to hand be string or yarn.
Kwik Stix (tempera paint sticks) in metallic colors can also add a paint-like effect without all the mess.
