When does the busy holiday season start for you?
I know that stores start putting out Halloween stuff in July. And Thanksgiving items pop up quickly after that.
For our family, I feel like we really start to get excited about the holidays right before Thanksgiving. And that means energy levels go through the roof!
My boys want to do ALL the things. Decorate, cook, bake, crafts, and activities. I love their excitement but I’m often still planning what we’re having for Thanksgiving dinner!
To counter that excitement and give them positive ways to channel that energy, I make sure to have simple activities ready so I can catch my breath and get something done. Simple printables are easy to print out and store for my boys to enjoy.

Word searches can be wonderful activities for kids to enjoy. Plus, there are so many benefits to working on these types of word puzzles.
Recently, my boys have taken a liking to word searches. I’ve noticed an improvement in their spelling and writing. Also, they’ve been more patient with their homeschool work-much more willing to persist with a difficult problem than to just give up. Growth mindset skills practice for the win!
As much as my boys love word searches, I still like to find ways to make the activity even more fun. We’ll add this Thanksgiving Word Search to our holiday poetry teatime for a quiet celebration.
Other ways to make word search puzzles fun include:
- Provide different writing utensils for circling the words. Your kids will love using highlighters, markers, Kwik Stix, crayons, or color pencils.
- Encourage your kids to quietly spell out the words as they work on the puzzle. Great way to practice spelling! (And you might hear them singing the letters 😉 )
- Use Thanksgiving-themed pencils for a fun treat!
- Have Thanksgiving-themed stickers and stamps ready to decorate the word search.
- Work with your kids to complete the word search. Make it interactive!
- If you have a large group or class, pair up students and have them work in teams for a fun competition.
