My Simple Approach to Enjoying Spring Homeschool Fun
In our homeschool, spring is a time to celebrate nature and connect with the world around us. We kick off the season with a Spring Homeschool Bucket List, where we brainstorm fun activities to do, based on our family's interests and experiences. Bucket lists are a great way to keep everyone engaged and excited about the upcoming season - and they help guide our plans for the next few months. Want to join in the fun? You can grab my free 365 Fun Days & Activities Pack filled with lots of seasonal ideas!
3 Ways to Make Spring Fun in Your Homeschool
I’m all about keeping things simple and stress-free. Here are three key ways I plan our spring homeschool activities:
- Outdoor Activities: Take advantage of the warmer weather! Fresh air and outdoor play can boost creativity and focus. Try outdoor math games with sidewalk chalk or go on a spring walk with my free printable scavenger hunt.
- Hands-On Projects: Spring is the perfect time for hands-on activities, like making lavender cloud dough, playing with slime, or creating a simple garden. Need more ideas? I’ve got a list of 20 outdoor science activities and a free printable pack for designing your own projects.
- Printable Fun: For when you need quick and easy activities, printables are your friend! I’ve got spring-themed coloring sheets, word searches, math coordinate graphing, and more—all designed to fit seamlessly into your day.
Spring Holidays & Fun Days
Spring brings wonderful opportunities to celebrate holidays and fun days like Easter and Earth Day. Enjoy activities like decorating Easter eggs (we've got a tie-dye coffee filter activity you'll love), making Easter surprise cards, and participating in Earth Day challenges.
Tips for Easy Spring Homeschool Days
- Be Flexible: Embrace outdoor learning and let kids explore what interests them.
- Keep it Light: Low-prep activities like DIY nature journals or outdoor play are a great way to keep things simple.
- Let Kids Lead: Spring is a time to let your kids explore topics that excite them.
I hope these ideas help you add some extra joy to your homeschool this spring. Remember, it’s okay to mix things up and try new activities—especially if you haven’t tried taking your homeschool outdoors yet!

Let's Make This Spring Fun!
Hey hey! Welcome to another episode of the Positively Homeschool Podcast! Spring is almost here! And I want to help you shake off those winter blues and bring some seasonal fun into your homeschool.
Spring is such an awesome time to add some new life to your homeschooling adventure. It's a time when you can connect with nature, celebrate holidays, incorporate hands-on learning, and much more.
I’ve got some easy and fun ways to boost your homeschool this spring - so, let’s get to it!
My Simple Approach to Enjoying Spring Homeschool Fun
As I chatted about in our episodes of February and March homeschool ideas, I always look forward to celebrating spring with my boys. Here in western Pennsylvania, our winters can be harsh (well, at least to me who much prefers sunshine and warmth!). To me, spring means thawing, warmer temps, and lots of green to be seen. Everything just seems brighter and happier and lovely.
Typically, a lot of my homeschool fun planning and preparing involves Fun Days, holidays, and monthly themes. I do love to weave in some seasonal activities, especially when there’s a lull in those other things.
Oh, and I wanted to mention that free printable Fun Days calendar, as well as my free 365 Fun Days & Activities pack that has multiple ideas per day so you can pick and choose what ideas you’d like to enjoy for easy homeschool fun. It also has seasonal ideas so helpful for spring!
Back to my simple approach to spring homeschool fun…on the first day of spring (for 2025, that’s March 20), my boys and I will chat about the change of seasons during our homeschool morning time. Then, we’ll start to put together our Spring Homeschool Bucket List. I’ve found bucket lists to be super helpful, especially for seasonal fun.
For our bucket lists, we brainstorm things that we’d like to do for that season. We’ve been using bucket lists almost from the very start of our homeschooling adventures - so about 13 years. Some of those ideas are repeats but others are new to us, especially as the boys get older.
We don’t end up doing all of the ideas. But, it’s nice to have them to reference and reminders for when we need a bit of fun.
And some of my boys’ interests have come out of trying these bucket list ideas! For example, my middle boy wanted to learn more about gardening. Well, his interests sparked a deep dive into gardening in our area and led to container gardening that he could enjoy on our deck.
Have you tried a homeschool bucket list with your kids? If not, I highly encourage you to give it a go, especially this spring!
3 Ways to Make Spring Fun in Your Homeschool
In an effort to help you keep it as stress-free and simple as possible, I’ll share 3 ways to enjoy fun spring homeschool activities. As with any ideas that I share, I recommend that you use these tips and suggestions as inspiration and tweak according to your family’s needs and interests.
Also, It’s very helpful to keep it as frugal and flexible as possible. Gather ideas, have a flexible plan, and weave fun into your homeschool day. That way - when life happens, it’s really no biggie! You can pivot and move a fun activity to a different day or week.
Looking ahead to Spring, I’m planning and preparing based on:
- Outdoor
- Hands-On Activities
- Printables
I’ll incorporate ideas for spring holidays (like Easter) and fun days (like Earth Day, Arbor Day).
Outdoor Spring Ideas for Homeschool Fun
With warmer weather and more sun, head outside when you can! Fresh air can do wonders for your homeschool.
Last episode, I mentioned one of my boys’ favorite things about spring - mud! Instead of fighting the mess, I tried to just go with it. I would plan outings and appointments in the morning whenever possible. And then we’d pop outside for some outdoor spring fun - mud and all.
The boys would write in mud, practice math facts, and do all sorts of “science” experiments. Although it wasn’t book learning, we would actually get a lot of work done. I’d bring books outside and they’d listen to me read as they played. They often paid attention better when doing so!
Before we’d go outside, I’d have the boys help me prepare by gathering towels and bags. We’d fill a bucket with water (or use a hose) to wash them off before going back inside our house. I set firm expectations of how it would go and they were more than happy to comply.
Now, I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea - and I totally get it if you don’t want to touch that idea with a ten-foot pole. Just putting it out there!
Some other “cleaner” ways to have outdoor spring fun are:
- Go on a spring walk - and use our free printable scavenger hunt for things to look
- Get out sidewalk chalk and practice math, writing, spelling words, and more
- Use that sidewalk chalk for outdoor art time! Draw your own frames and create colorful pictures. Take a picture to remember!
- Play with bubbles. Make your own bubble solutions (can be a fun science experiment!). Count how many bubbles you can blow - and pop. Try different types of bubble wands (store-bought, DIY like pipe cleaners).
- I’ve got a bunch of spring science experiments that you can try - many are best to do outside. I’ll add a link in the show notes!
- Oh and here’s a list of 20 outdoor science activities!
- Consider starting a garden or planting flowers. Your kids can keep a journal, write, or draw about the experiences.
Hands-On Activities Spring Homeschool Fun
Spring is an amazing time to enjoy some creative projects and hands-on activities.
For a relaxing/calming hands-on activity, make our lavender cloud dough recipe. It smells so good and is fantastic for using with our spring playdough mats and more. Oh, and our Cool Whip playdough is fun for anytime of year!
Slime can be another sensational hands-on activity. My boys like to play with slime during read-aloud time. Our ocean/water slime has been super popular!
For spring-themed projects, I think gardens or flowers work well. If you don’t have a lot of room (or have a brown thumb like me), I suggest starting small and sprouting seeds then work up to planting in a pot.
Some more project ideas for spring homeschool fun are:
- Birdwatching (one of our favorites!)
- Environmental projects (I have a list on my site - like start a compost pile)
- I have a free printable pack for designing your own projects - I’ll link to it in the show notes!
Crafts are more ways to have creative spring fun with kids. And I really love to do crafts that recycle! Turn that trash into treasure!!
A few cool spring-themed crafts to try are:
- Rainbow coffee filter (so colorful and easy to make!)
- Kite suncatcher (another colorful craft that really brightens your windows)
- Paper plate torn paper umbrella craft
- Coffee filter wreath (make your own spring decorations)
- Coffee filter butterfly (so cute for DIY decorations)
Printable Activities for Quick Spring Fun
Printables are perfect for when you need something quick. You can get these activities printed and ready to go. And they can be nice ways to kind of round out your seasonal celebration.
Get these activities ready for rainy day fun, brain breaks, or just because:
- Spring color by number pages
- Spring-themed word search (with word list that you can use for spelling fun)
- Spring coordinate graphing activities (great for math time!)
- Spring alphabet tracing worksheets (great for handwriting and coloring)
Oh, and I have a free printable Spring photo challenge! I print out a few copies and put them on clipboards. Take pictures OR draw based on the prompts.
