Unique Crafts for Unicorn Fun with Kids

Need simple yet cool ways to help your unicorn fans enjoy their favorite mythical creatures? Try perler bead crafts!

These hands-on activities are fantastic opportunities to have some unicorn fun with kids ️🦄

When I was a little girl, I loved unicorns (and pegasus). These beautiful creatures in books and movies always seemed so gentle and sweet.

My boys even think unicorns are cool. I think that's from reading about them and seeing them in the Harry Potter series 😉 (And I love that we have these unicorn bookmarks to enjoy, too!)

I knew that I wanted to share one of my childhood favorites (like this mythical creature) with one of their new craft activities.

My boys love crafting with perler beads. They make all sorts of cool stuff with these small plastic beads (also called fuse beads or Hama beads). The boys transform these DIY crafts into little toys, keychains, and decor. And I couldn't wait to have my own unicorn perler bead projects to enjoy!

And this type of plastic fuse bead crafting is a great addition to your learning fun activities for hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

How to Make These Unicorn-Themed Perler Bead Crafts

Craft time using perler beads with your children can be super fun when you use these tips and tricks (and easy instructions). You'll find that it makes it so much easier to create all of these cool crafts.

My #1 tip is to have ALL of your supplies prepared and organized before you work on your unicorn bead pattern.

I got a large canister of perler beads and perler bead peg boards that connect (in case the boys want to create larger crafts). And I purchased a plastic craft organizer to make it easy to sort the perler beads by colors. Oh, and this perler beads kit looks awesome and comes with everything you need!

Your kids may prefer using perler beads tweezer tools. These types of tools are totally optional - my boys like to work with their fingers.

After your perler bead creation is completed on the pegboard, place it on a flat surface.

The set of perler bead pegboards that I have includes reusable ironing paper. I discovered that you can also use parchment paper or waxed paper. This type of paper is placed over your completed creation.

You need an iron to fuse your perler beads. I set the temperature of my iron to a medium heat. When your iron is warm enough, press firmly on the ironing paper and slowly move around. I sneak a look at the perler bead creation about every 30 seconds to see how well the beads are melting together.

When using these unicorn perler bead templates, I suggest going over the template with your child and have them pick out a favorite one for their first craft.

If you don't have the exact colors as shown in the patterns, don't worry. Use various colors you have and enjoy your designs. In fact, you can easily customize these unique crafts to feature your favorite colors! Colorful unicorns are so beautiful 😍

If you find a better production process for your perler bead craft time, go for it the next time!

Fun Ways to Enjoy Crafts with Unicorn Perler Beads

Chat with your children about their ideas for these perler bead art activities. Brainstorm ways to make and share your unicorn perler bead crafts, too.

One idea is to start a collection of perler bead crafts. My boys have their crafts in their bedrooms, as well as decorate our homeschool carts and bookcases with them. They have quite an assortment at this point with our free Pokemon, Minecraft, Easter, Earth Day, football, soccer, school-themed, and Super Mario packs.

Another idea is to leave room at the top of your perler bead craft to put a hole. You can add a key chain ring or loose binder ring. Your kids can use this type of craft for a unicorn charm, key chains, decorate party gift bags (great gift tags!), and party favors.

Your kids can also make their own designs and perler bead pattern with unicorn themes.
