Lovely Crafts for Butterfly Fun with Kids

Do you and your kids lovely butterflies, too? You've got to try these perler bead crafts!

These hands-on activities are fantastic opportunities to have some butterfly fun with kids ️🦋

My boys and I adore butterflies. One of our favorite activities to do each year during late spring or early summer is to adopt caterpillars and watch their transformation into butterflies. (If you'd like to enjoy this activity with your kids, I highly recommend kits from Insect Lore!).

Well, my boys also love crafting with perler beads. They create all sorts of cool stuff with these small plastic beads (also called fuse beads or Hama beads). The boys transform these DIY crafts into little toys, keychains, and decor.

This free printable pack of butterfly perler bead patterns has 1 page (plus terms of use page) and features 9 symbols.

These patterns were created to be made on a square board 29x29 peg diameter with 5mm beads. You don't have to use that specific recommendation - my boys were able to easily use these patterns on different size boards that we have 😊

The butterfly symbols with perler bead patterns included in this set are:

  • 1 small butterfly (pink)
  • 2 small butterflies (purple and blue)
  • 1 large butterfly (purple, blue, and pink)
  • 2 multi-colored hearts
  • 3 small flowers (or stars)

How to Make These Butterfly-Themed Perler Bead Crafts

Making crafts with perler beads with your children can be so much fun when you use these tips and tricks. You'll discover that it makes it so much easier to create all of these cool crafts.

My top tip is to have ALL of your materials prepared and organized.

I purchased a big canister of perler beads and perler bead peg boards that connect (if my boys want to create larger crafts). And I got a plastic craft organizer to make it easy to sort the perler beads by colors. Oh, and this perler beads kit looks amazing and comes with all the supplies that you need!

Your kids may prefer using perler beads tweezer tools. These types of tools are totally optional - my boys like to work with their fingers.

After your perler bead craft is completed on the pegboard, place it on a flat surface.

The set of perler bead pegboards that I have includes reusable ironing paper. I discovered that you can also use parchment paper or waxed paper. This type of paper is placed over your completed creation.

You need an iron to fuse your perler beads. I set the temperature of my iron to a medium heat. When your iron is warm enough, press firmly on the ironing paper and slowly move around. I take a look at the perler bead creation about every 30 seconds or so to see how well the beads are melting together.

When the beads are melted together, let the craft cool off. I place a heavy book or two on the creation to encourage it to stay flat. After waiting about an hour, I slowly life the perler bead craft off the pegboard. Enjoy!

When using these butterfly perler bead templates, I suggest looking at all the patterns with your child and have them pick out a favorite one for their first craft.

If you don't have the exact colors as shown in the patterns, don't worry. Use what colors you have and enjoy your designs. In fact, you can easily customize these unique crafts to feature your favorite colors!

Cool Ways to Enjoy Crafts with Butterfly Perler Beads

Talk with your kids about their ideas for these perler bead art activities. Brainstorm ways to make and share your butterfly perler bead crafts, too.

One fun idea is to start a collection of perler bead crafts. My boys have their crafts in their bedrooms, as well as decorate our homeschool carts and bookcases with them. They have quite an assortment at this point with our free Pokemon, Minecraft, Easter, Earth Day, football, soccer, school-themed, and Super Mario packs.

Another incredible idea is to leave room at the top of your butterfly perler bead craft to put a hole. You can add a key chain ring or loose binder ring. Your kids can use this type of craft for a unicorn charm, key chains, decorate party gift bags (terrific gift tags!), and party favors.

Your kids can also create their own designs and perler bead pattern with butterfly themes.
