Celebrate Summer in Your Homeschool This July

In my last episode for June homeschool ideas, I chatted about starting the season with a whole bunch of summer fun. Well, let’s keep those good times going! Because even if you’re still doing lessons (like we do as year-round homeschoolers) you can still have a blast with summer fun in July. Some ideas to try:

  • Outdoor Science: Enjoy simple science experiments outside (fantastic time to work on those messy projects!). And try 20 outdoor science activities to try – you can find the link in the show notes.
  • Summer Reading Challenge: You’ve still got plenty of time for a fun reading challenge. Get my summer reading challenge pack. Use code SUMMERREADING24 to get it for free.
  • Field Trips: I’m super excited because this month my younger boys and I are heading out to Hershey, PA to visit my college boy who’s doing an internship at the Antique Automobile Museum (perfect for a history major!). We’ll be learning about antique cars and then popping over to Hershey Park and The Hershey Story Museum to learn about Milton S. Hershey. And you better bet I’ll be using our FREE homeschool field trips pack! It has a big list of ideas, planner, and field trip report page (if you’d like your kids to have something for their homeschool portfolios).

Celebrate the 4th of July with Learning Fun

Ah, Independence Day! A perfect time for some red, white, and blue homeschool fun! There are so many ways to celebrate while squeezing in learning opportunities that feel more like play. Here are some ideas:

  • History at Home: Celebrate the holiday and enjoy a fun mini-unit study all about the 4th of July.
  • 4th of July Math: Incorporate themed math activities like counting stars and making patterns with red, white, and blue.

Ice Cream Days for July Homeschool Ideas

Now, who doesn’t love a good excuse to enjoy some ice cream in July? There are actually two fun days with ice cream themes – Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day on July 1 and Ice Cream Day on July 21. Our Ice Cream and Sweet Treats Unit Study is a great thing to enjoy as you celebrate both. A few other ideas are:

  • Science of Ice Cream: Enjoy a simple science experiment by making your own ice cream at home! You can make it in a bag or use an ice cream maker. Talk about the science behind freezing and how ingredients combine to create that delicious treat.
  • Creative Writing: Have your kids come up with their own ice cream flavors and then write stories or descriptions about them. Bonus points for creating an imaginary ice cream shop complete with a menu and ads!

Harry Potter’s Birthday – A Magical Learning Experience in July

Did you know that Harry Potter’s birthday is July 31? It’s the perfect time to sprinkle a little bit of wizardry into your homeschool as you wrap up this fun month.

  • Harry Potter Day: You can dedicate a day (or week) to a Harry Potter Celebration. I have a bunch of resources! My boys and I plan something different every year and have such a blast. We alway bake some tasty treats and enjoy different activities and games. So much fun!!

A Glimpse Into Our July Homeschool Fun

Now, I’d like to share a little bit about how we do July in our homeschool. As year-round homeschoolers, we love that July gives us the chance to slow down and make things feel extra relaxed. When the weather gets hot, we start our homeschool day early to beat the heat. By the afternoon, you’ll find us enjoying some time in our above-ground pool – nothing fancy, but it works for us!

One thing that works really well for us during this time of year is increasing our independent reading time. We aim for at least 30 minutes of reading every day which I’ve found is a great way to keep the learning going and exploring new books and genres.

I also try to fit in at least one field trip if possible, if time and budget allows. It could be anything from a local museum to a nature walk, but it’s such a nice change of pace for the boys. I’m all about making the most of those moments when we can get outside and explore.

When my boys were younger, we followed a similar summer routine – early start then quiet time in the afternoon so the little ones could nap while the older ones had some one-on-one time with me. Summer always felt like a more carefree time for us. And I’ve tried to carry that vibe into our homeschool over the years.

And just a little reminder before we wrap up, if you’re looking for help with planning your preschool at home routine (like the one I used with my boys when they were younger), I’ve got a new free editable homeschool preschool routine planning set that you can grab. Plus, I’ve launched a new homeschool preschool activities series that’s full of fun, low-prep activities perfect for these relaxed summer months.

Whether you’re celebrating a holiday, making ice cream, or having some Harry Potter fun, July is the perfect month to mix relaxed summer vibes with homeschool fun! The key is to make it enjoyable and flexible – such a great time to let go of perfection and embrace what the month has in store. The best part? You’re building memories with your kids while sneaking in some educational moments along the way!

Before I go, I want to remind you to pop over Rock Your Homeschool (and my new site design – I love it so much!!) for free resources, activity kits, and more ideas for keeping your homeschool fun, relaxed, and stress-free all summer long. You’ve got this, mama!

Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Positively Homeschooling! Be sure to share this with your homeschool community, and as always, if you have any questions or suggestions for future episodes, I’d love to hear from you.

Take care, and let’s make this July the best one yet!
