Let's Make April Fun in Your Homeschool

Hey hey! Welcome to another episode of the Positively Homeschooling Podcast! If you’d like some ways to make learning fun this April in your homeschool, I’ve got some awesome ideas, activities, and other cool things to try.

Short on time and money? No worries! I’ve got quick, easy, and budget-friendly ideas that are perfect for April. 

April has a whole bunch of awesome fun days and celebrations. So, get ready to enjoy activities, projects, and themes to keep your homeschool motivated and moving - especially if you’re nearing the finish line for this year of homeschool (or just need a bit of momentum).

3 Simple Ways to Make April Fun

Over the years, I’ve tried a lot of different ways to make our homeschool more fun. Some have been big hits (and some have been big flops). 

When I think about the big hits, I see some commonalities, things that each one had that made them work. The magic or trick behind these success seem to be:

  • Keeping it simple  (plus short and sweet whenever possible)
  • Low- to no-cost (because then I’m not stressing about spending money on an activity that may or may not work) 
  • Staying flexible (because life happens and sometimes plans need to move around)

When I first started weaving fun activities into our homeschool day, I did a lot of planning and preparation. We’ve been at this homeschool thing for almost 14 years (more if you count all the amazing time I had with my boys from birth ‘til now!) and I find I don’t need to do that much planning and prep now.

Homeschool fun is like a muscle - the more you work it, the bigger, better, and easier it gets!

As I look ahead to April, I’m planning and preparing based on:

  • Themes
  • Fun days
  • Holidays
  1. Themes:

Monthly themes for April totally rock! Here are themes that I’ll present to my 3 active homeschoolers (the older 2 have graduated!) and we’ll work together to brainstorm how and when to celebrate:

  • Spring is still in season so themes of:
    • Flowers
    • Butterflies
    • Bees
    • Gardens
    • Rainbows
    • Weather 

Also, you can pick themes based on April Monthly Observations, like:

  • Pickleball: My boys and I have a blast with pickleball! Our driveway is paved and we have a portable pickleball net, paddles, and balls. It’s a super fun way to get some fresh air, take a break, and even enjoy homeschool physical education!
  • Afternoon Tea:  Great time to enjoy poetry teatime! 
  • Brunch:  Oh my stars! Plan a homeschool brunch. Look into what food and drink is commonly served at brunch. Get in the kitchen and have some cooking and baking fun.
  • Financial Literacy:  Fantastic time to introduce (or review) important money skills. My youngest is wrapping up Beyond Finance curriculum - it’s brilliant!
  • Volunteer: This month is a wonderful time to look into volunteer opportunities for your homeschool and family.
  • Occupational Therapy:  This one is near and dear to my heart! My sister is an OT and does such important work. Use this opportunity for career exploration.
  • Welding:  Another great one to add to your career exploration list!
  • Poetry:  And another perfect reason to enjoy poetry teatime!
  • Soft Pretzel: We love to make our own soft pretzels! I grew up in South Jersey and Philly Pretzels were a very big thing. There’s nothing quite like a genuine soft pretzel from Philly but this recipe comes close. I’ll leave a link in the show notes.
  • Jazz Appreciation:  Use as part of your homeschool music time.
  • International Guitar:  Another awesome addition to homeschool music!

Ideas for Unit Studies and Activities for April

I’ve got great feedback (thank you!) about the unit studies for each month so here’s April! 

Let’s look at some ideas that you can think about doing for April fun in your homeschool:

April Crafts

Coloring

Projects

  • April 1 is One Cent Day. Grab as many pennies as you can find. Stack them as high as you can. Count how many pennies there are!
  • For Read a Road Map Day (April 5), find an actual paper road map and teach your kids how to read it. Make your own road map of your neighborhood, town, or county.
  • April 10 is Golfer’s Day. Make your own mini-golf course with paper or plastic cups, soft ball, and empty paper towel rolls fashioned into a DIY golf club.
  • Bucket List Day is April 24. Make a homeschool bucket list!

Art

  • Enjoy homeschool art projects with April themes
  • Also, learn about artists born in April, like:
    • 2 Max Ernst 1891
    • 6 Raphael 1483
    • 15 Leonardo da Vinci 1452
    • 23 J.M.W. Turner 1775
    • 26 Eugene Delacroix 1798

Music

  • Listen to music with April themes 
  • Learn about composers or famous musicians born in April. You could study:
    • Rachmaninoff - April 1, 1872
    • Duke Ellington - April 29, 1899

History

  • What historical events happened in April? Work with your kids and research both local and state events, as well as national and world events, like:
    • April 2, 1513 - Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon sighted Florida and claimed it for Spain
    • April 4, 1968 - Civil Rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed
    • My boys and I use this 365 Days of History calendar as part of our homeschool morning time for fun facts. I’ll link to it in the show notes!

Science

  • Find a Rainbow Day is April 3. Learn about the science behind rainbows, weather.
  • International Bat Appreciation Day is April 17. Learn about bats for science fun.
  • Arbor Day is April 25. Learn about dendrology (the science of trees).
  • Gummi Bear Day is April 27. Kiwi Co shares a fun activity for science fun with gummi bears.
