5 Ways to Make March Fun
I’ve got 5 things or pillars that you can build off of when making homeschooling fun this March.
Most importantly, I say keep it simple, frugal, and stay flexible. It’s helpful to gather ideas, have a flexible plan, and weave fun into your homeschool day. When life happens, no biggie! You can pivot and move a fun activity to a different day or week.
Looking ahead to March, I’m planning and preparing based on:
- Themes
- Fun days
- Holidays
- Interest-led
- Activities for all of the above!
- Themes:
March has some super cool monthly themes to work with and celebrate. Plus, in the Northern Hemisphere, we’re eagerly awaiting spring! I’ll be chatting about spring homeschool ideas in the next episode, but a few themes to consider are:
- Flowers
- Weather
- Rainbows
- Birds
- Gardens - seeds, plants, trees
- Earth - environment
- Butterflies (and other pollinators)
- Life cycles
Another theme that was super popular with my boys in March/Spring - MUD! We’re usually just starting to thaw here in Western Pennsylvania and have a lot of mud. (I’ve got a really cool mud kitchen scavenger hunt + ideas freebie for you).
Also, you can pick themes based on March Monthly Observations, like:
- Red Cross: learn about this organization, talk about volunteering, community helpers
- Athletic Training: learn about this profession, use for career exploration
- Social Work
- Women’s History
- Noodle
- Frozen Food
- Flour
- Craft: enjoy simple crafts, organize your craft supplies
- Celery
- Peanut
- Umbrella
- Nutrition: fantastic opportunity to learn more about health and wellness, start a food journal
You can also look at March Weekly Themes for more ideas and inspiration.
- Fun Days: There are SO many amazing March fun days! My boys and I love to celebrate these nationally-recognized days that can be silly or serious. Remember to get my free printable Fun Day Calendar for Kids that you can use to color and customize.
You can find links in the show notes to ideas and resources for many of these fun days. And I’ll brainstorm ideas for some of them now:
- Dr. Seuss Day (March 2): You can find a bunch of freebies over on the blog to help you celebrate this fun day. A few of the most popular are:
- Dr. Seuss cootie catcher (with 2 styles - includes movement prompts to get your kids up and moving - fantastic for brain breaks!)
- Activity cube - also has movement prompts
- Mad Libs
- Math worksheets and games
- Mario Day (March 10): Got Super Mario fans? Well, March 10 is their day! March 10 was chosen for this fun day because when you write out Mar10, it looks like Mario. I’ve got some free Mario printable activities you can use, like:
- Super Mario printable crafts (mess-free ways to have all sorts of fun!)
- Super Mario activity sheets
- Super Mario coloring bookmarks
- Super Mario activities (mazes, I Spy, graphing, and more)

- Holidays: Celebrate March holidays in your homeschool!
- Mardi Gras: This holiday is on March 4 this year. I’ve got a fun paper plate mask you can try. And some freebies - like coloring and word search activities.
- St. Patrick’s Day: Make this holiday shine on March 17! You can use our St. Patrick’s Day activities pack, craft ideas, and free printables (like color by number, bookmarks, scavenger hunt, and more).
- Interest-Led Homeschool Fun
This idea applies to any month of the year! It’s been such a big hit with my boys so I really hope you give it a try with your kids, too. Talk with your kids about what they’re interested in now. Brainstorm how you can weave those interests into homeschool fun.
Last month, my youngest was all into perler bead crafts. Now, my three younger boys (the ones that I’m actively homeschooling) are back into board games. We use some educational board games during homeschool time (like Trekking Through History). And a chess match often happens at some point during the week. I love seeing how much all of us get out of playing games together!
- Activities
I chatted about homeschool fun activities for the month of February. And I’m bringing them up again because they just work so well.
I look at homeschool fun activities as a general category. These ideas might not exactly fit into a Fun Day, holiday, or season. I’d consider most board games a general homeschool fun activity. And using something like window markers or sidewalk chalk to practice math facts or handwriting. These activities are simple and stress-free ways to boost learning and make it more enjoyable for all.
These activities might be subject-related or more generalized. Depending on the ages of your kids, you may find that puzzles and building blocks work. Or homemade musical instruments and silly songs. My boys have really had a lot of fun with our free printable 3D houses!
The key to these homeschool fun activities is to find ideas and resources that your kids and you like. I encourage you to make up a big list of activities to try!
